CONNECTICUT SCHOOL SHOOTING
The active shooter incident in Connecticut shocked and saddened all of us. We offer our sincere sympathy for all those who mourn the loss of loved ones, in this case and beyond.
The past few days have been a frenzy of gun, magazine and ammo buying that surpasses even the post-2008 and post-2012 election surges. One distributor reported selling 70,000 AR mags over the last weekend. Brownells sold 3.5 years worth of magazines in 36 hours.
One of the common arguments made for banning "assault weapons" and "high capacity magazines" is that they enable a shooter to fire more rounds more quickly than manually operated guns. Here's an example of what a modern "cowboy action" shooter can do with 2 single action pistols, a lever action rifle and a pump shotgun. Here's an example of how quickly a pistol can be reloaded.
We are already past the tipping point with regard to gun availability. There are millions of Modern Sporting Rifles and high capacity magazines in circulation, and the current buying surge is only increasing the number even more.
Our mission at KRTraining, as embodied by the "shu-to " logo, is to support training and development of mindset and physical skills for personal safety and recreation, including safe and responsible operation of firearms.
Gun bans will not stop violent crime or eliminate tragedy.
- The CDC studied the impact of the previous assault weapon ban and found that it had no impact on reducing violent crime
- The United States Department of Justice National Institute of Justice found should the ban be renewed, its effects on gun violence would likely be small, and perhaps too small for reliable measurement, because rifles in general, including rifles referred to as "assault rifles" or "assault weapons", are rarely used in gun crimes
- A recent analysis by the left-wing publication Mother Jones shows that handguns, not assault weapons, were the most commonly used firearms in active shooter incidents.
- Despite a significant increase in the number of firearms owned by citizens, violent crime is at historic low levels. People always say that "crime is getting worse", but it's not.
The opinions of pundits, celebrities, politicians and grieving citizens should not carry the same weight as the opinions of those professionals whose full time job is to study school shooters. Those that are not part of the defensive firearms subculture are unlikely to have seen any of these excellent articles, which lay out realistic plans and actions that can be taken to reduce school shootings.
- [MUST READ] Law enforcement trainer Greg Ellifritz has published the best analysis I've found. It describes a plan that might actually work, based on a professional understanding of tactics, gunfighting, human behavior and security.
- Another excellent analysis from PoliceOne.com (law enforcement website)
- Law enforcement recommendations for a 3-tiered approach to armed response at schools, includes armed citizens
- Armed citizens stop and deter crime
- Citizens, even unarmed, have a better track record at stopping active shooters than police do
- They have stopped school shooters in the past, multiple times.
- For example, last week in San Antonio
- School shooters generally exhibit many behavioral problems that can be detected and acted on.
- One factor that motivates others to commit school shootings is the way the shooters are turned into celebrities by the media
- With just one single exception, the attack on congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns.
- This 11K word opus from Larry Correia covers all the gun politics issues in depth and clarity.
TEXAS GUN LAWS
Look for many new gun bills to be introduced this spring in the Texas Legislature, including
- Reduction in training hours required for CHL
- Allowing teachers to carry (supported by Gov. Perry)
- Campus carry
- Open carry

SCHOLASTIC PISTOL MATCH FEBRUARY 2nd
The Brazosland Pistoleros club and Gunsmoke range, in Bryan/College Station, will be hosting a Scholastic Pistol match on February 2nd. The match will use Scholastic Steel Challenge format stages. There are 3 divisions: junior (12-16), senior (17-20), and collegiate (must be a college student). Over the past year, KR Training has been supporting and coaching the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Marksmanship Team. The team placed 2nd in the last major Scholastic Pistol match of 2012.
I would like to field a 4 person KR Training team (or two or three) at the match. There will be rimfire and centerfire divisions. We will have a pre-match practice day at the A-Zone on Saturday, January 26th where we will have the stages set up. We have a number of loaner guns suitable for the match (must be .22 rimfire or 9mm striker fired). Team members would be responsible for their own ammo and match fees. Anyone interested in this opportunity, contact me.
BLOG-O-RAMA
- Comparison of Comp-Tac Minotaur vs. Crossbreed Holster. I prefer the all kydex CTAC to either of the hybrid models.
- Streamlight ProTac HL flashlight - my new favorite. 600 lumens beats everything else on the market, particularly for the $70 street price.

- NBC, in an act of total hypocrisy, cancels "3 Gun Nation" - a shooting sports show that shows real gun owners using firearms responsibly and non-violently, as a PR move. They continue to broadcast shows and movies that glamorize violence and give viewers ignorant of real guns incorrect and exaggerated depictions of gun usage.
