KR TRAINING JULY 2010 NEWS

UPCOMING CLASSES OF NOTE

Beyond the Basics: Handgun this Saturday from 9-1. Beyond the Basics is the class that teaches the fine points of trigger control and the relationship between sight picture quality, target size and speed. If you've wondered what Combat Focused Shooting, Surgical Speed Shooting, Aim Fast Hit Fast and all those other cleverly titled handgun courses you've read or heard about teach, take Beyond the Basics. Highly recommended for IPSC and IDPA competitors that want to improve their accuracy and speed.

SUPER SUMMER SPECIAL! If you've taken Beyond the Basics before and want to take it again as a refresher, attend for $40.

Defensive Pistol Skills 2, August 14. If you don't practice the skills you learned in Defensive Pistol Skills 1, they will deteriorate. DPS2 reviews DPS1 skills and adds new challenges and drills.

THE AWESOME POWER OF THE GLOCK .40

Fantasy, meet reality.

In the shooting incident described in the online article, the criminal, who had no drugs other than alcohol in his system, did not stop fighting until he received 17 center-mass hits from a .40 caliber handgun. The police officer, who was shot 4 times during the incident, survived. Graduates of our Defensive Pistol Skills and AT-level courses, take note of the officer's good use of movement, cover, and timely reloading during this incident.

Defensive Pistol Skills 1 , August 21. Highly recommended for those coming to Basic Pistol 2 that same day, people with CHLs that have never had any real defensive handgun training, and pretty much anybody that owns a gun for the purpose of self defense. At $60 for 3 hours of training, it's a cheap investment in personal security.

CRIME IN TEXAS

People in Austin often this of it as a "low crime" city. Recent reports I've received recently include: a team of burglars hitting unoccupied homes in an upscale neighborhood (the Enclave), a citizen surprising a burglar in the home in the Lost Creek area, a panhandler slashing the throat of two people on 6th street, two people shot at by robbers fleeing an armed robbery, and a shooting incident in Pflugerville where a homeowner fired 15 rounds through a front door at gang members, killing 1.

This recent Houston Chronicle article has depressing stats on burglary (most are never caught) and some good tips on burglary prevention

The Violence Policy Center's recent study reaches conclusions that don't match the data. Surprised? I'm not. Howard Nemerov explains in this article.

Tom Givens will be visiting us in October 2010 for his Combative Pistol 2 class, which is his most advanced pistol course.

IPSC RANGE OFFICER COURSE

The class will be conducted by NROI at Austin Rifle Club on Saturday, August 21st and Sunday, August 22nd. The cost of the class is $60. Saturday is a full day that will be conducted in the classroom. Sunday morning is a half day that will involve both classroom and range time. Estimated times are 8-5 on Saturday and 8-12 on Sunday. You must be an active member of USPSA. Bring 50 rounds of ammo. Once you are certified, you re-certify annually, no cost. The re-cert test is available online, and is graded right away. You can still get a paper version if you wish. USPSA mails out a reminder postcard about 30 days prior to the RO expiration date.

Note: The IPSC Range Officer course is recommended for NRA Pistol and Personal Protection instructors. It teaches advanced range officer skills essential to working with shooters doing defensive and practical handgun skills. These courses are not often available in our area.

LEANNASAURUS REX VIDEOS

When I'm not working at TEEX or teaching KR Training classes, I play with several different bands in the Central Texas area. One of those bands, "Leannasaurus Rex", was recently voted Best Local Band for the 2nd year in a row by the readers of The Eagle, which is the local newspaper in Bryan/College Station. We'll be playing in Kerrville in September and in the Austin area in October, in addition to our regular B/CS area shows. Video of several songs from a recent show, along with video from performances with many other bands I've played with, can be viewed on youtube on my Karl Rehn Music youtube channel.
