KR TRAINING APRIL 2010 NEWS

AT-7 FoF Scenarios

There are still spaces available in the Advanced Training 7 - Force on Force Scenarios course. I've dropped the course to 3 hours and the cost down to $50 (less than our normal $20/hr rate). This class will consist of the same scenarios we will be running at the Polite Society Conference in Tulsa the last weekend of April. I have dropped the requirements for this course also. Anyone with a CHL can attend. Prior force on force experience is recommended but not required.

COMPETITION PISTOL

The most recent IPSC club match at the Austin Rifle Club attracted an all-time record 95 shooters. The ARC berm expansion has revived competition pistol shooting in the Austin area. Our Competition Pistol 1 class, scheduled for May 29, is a great way to prepare for your first match and learn about IPSC, IDPA and Steel Challenge competition. The course includes lecture on the basic rules of each of the shooting games, practice drills and sample stages from each type of match.

TEAM TACTICS TRAINING?

If you are interested in two-person team tactics (live fire and/or "red gun", for two armed or one armed/one unarmed person), let me know. Course format would be 8 hours, mixing lecture, 'red gun' work indoors and around vehicles and live fire drills. The armed/unarmed tactics would be a 6 hour course covering similar material with different live fire drills, since one partner in that course would be unarmed.

CHL PROCESS IMPROVES

From DPS: as of May 1st concealed handgun licensees renewing their CHL will no longer be required to include pictures or finger prints. http://www.tsra.com/images/stories/general/chlbulletin04072010.pdf

This is a major step toward further streamlining the licensing process and more changes are in the works, including improvements to the online application process.

APRIL RANGEMASTER NEWSLETTER

The April edition of the Rangemaster Newsletter is now online. Tom Givens from Rangemaster will be returning to KR Training in October to teach his Combative Pistol 2 class. The April newsletter includes several excellent articles, including Tom's analysis of DoJ crime data, showing that you are 4x more likely to need your gun away from home (on the street, in a bank, gas station or other business) than you are to need it when you are at home. Other articles discuss magazine reliability, storing a pistol in your car, and selecting defensive ammunition.

FREE ONLINE CYBERSECURITY TRAINING

Part of my job with the Texas Engineering Extension Service is teaching cybersecurity courses. TEEX also hosts ten free cybersecurity courses. These e-learning classes were developed by the University of Memphis under Department of Homeland Security funding and now they are hosted by TEEX and available to anyone. Topics range from basic (Cyber-security for Everyone) to advanced (Secure Software, Digital Forensics). Take the courses online at

MODERN GUN CULTURE IS FOCUSED ON DEFENSIVE PISTOL

This recent National Shooting Sports Foundation poll shows what many of us already knew: 21st century gun owners are mainly interested in target shooting and personal defense, and handguns, not long guns, are the most popular firearm type. This reflects the slow change in the American "gun culture" from a hunting culture to a concealed-carry culture.

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!

The last day for early voting in the Primary Run-Off Elections is tomorrow, Friday, April 9th. Election Day is April 13th. Don't miss out on voting! Low voter turn out is a major concern. Check the Texas State Rifle Association voter's guide and the web site at http://www.tsrapac.com. Remember there's a Texas Supreme Court race that will impact us al, and there are now two special elections of concern. SD 22 which is Central Texas and HD 66 the Richardson/Plano area. Both of those special elections will be held on May 8th.
